About Basketball
Basketball is played between two teams with five players each, who try to score by passing a ball through a loop or basket like structure. It is by certain statistics, the most popular game in the world. Basketball was basically invented in North America. It is said to be invented by James Naismith a Canadian born Physical Education Professor. It is not found in ancient cultures just as other games like hockey.
Basketball is one of the modern inventions as compared to other games. Until 1906 peach baskets were used in the game of basketball. Then they were replaced by metal hoops located on a backboard. When a person put the ball in the basket, he scored a point for his team. The team that scored more points than opponents is the winner. The baskets were nailed to the level of the court. To prevent the interference of the spectator, backboard was introduced. The board had another advantage, that is, it allowed the ball to rebound. It is interesting to note that the most of the rules of Basketball were based on a children's game known as "Duck on a Rock".
The first official game of basketball was played on January 20, 1882 in a gymnasium of YMCA with nine players. In the year 1998, five member's team became the standard. The YMCA spread and further developed the game during the next decade. It was responsible for all the rules of the game. The National Basketball League was established in 1898 which lasted five years. The game was adopted by many universities and colleges. In the year 1901, Columbia University, University of Chicago, University of Minnesota, Dartmouth College, US Naval Academy, and the Yale University started the sponsoring the game. Gradually the game became popular in USA and Canada.
In the year 1937, the first men's national championship tournament was held which exists even today as the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The game was defamed during 1948 to 1951 as many players were implicated in match fixing. The Basketball Association of America was formed in the year 1946. The National Basketball League was formed in 1949. Today NBA is the most prominent Basketball League of the world.
The International Basketball Federation was founded in the year 1932. It is now known as FIFA derived from the French Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur as it oversaw only amateur players. The first FIBA world championship for men was held in 1950 in Argentina and the first FIBA world championship was held in 1953 in Chile.
